Wednesday officials put the cables up for hikers to scale the granite mountain. The trail to half dome covers more than 17 miles, and reach elevations of 4,800 feet.
Beginning this season, hikers will need permits to make the trip on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays and on holidays. Permits are not required for hikers who only make the trip to the base of the cables.
