Fresno man drove scooter into trench

FRESNO, Calif.

It happened as PG&E crews worked on underground gas lines in the area and hazmat crews were also called to the scene as a precaution. Fresno Fire officials say the man was driving a personal mobility scooter -- and drove past the barricades.

They say PG&E crews also yelled out to the man -- but for whatever reason, he kept on going.

"We were fortunate that PG&E individuals that were right there at the time of the incident occurred because they jumped in, pulled the Lark off the individual, and then of course, summoned fire, rescue, hazmat, and EMS," Chuck Tobias said.

The fire department's confined space rescue team brought in equipment to pull the man out of the trench -- while a hazmat team monitored the air quality. The man was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
