Two California bills target metal theft

Some farmers are hoping two new bills will help slow metal theft.

Farmers say copper wire, steel pipes and other metal continue to disappear from farms and ranches, and are being sold for scrap.

Now, farmers and law enforcement officials say two bills are on Governor Jerry Brown's desk. One would help police and other officials in fighting theft. The other would clamp down on illegal recyclers that buy stolen metal.

Both bills easily passed in the legislature.
