MERCED, Calif. (KFSN) -- It happened on Wednesday night, a tenant at an apartment complex shot and killed an intruder breaking into his home.
Police say the break-in happened at Yosemite and M Streets, which is near a major intersection in Merced.
"It appears he was truly in fear for his life and was protecting his life in his own home," said Lt. Don King.
Authorities say the suspect, now identified as Moana LogoLogo, kicked in the door. You can see the broken door frame in the pictures.
They say the tenant armed himself with a shotgun, and when the suspect approached him, he shot him.
The intruder was taken to the hospital where he later died from the injury.
"He said he didn't know who this individual was. He was fearful and has been very cooperative with individuals involved in this case," said Lt. King.
Lt. King says the suspect parked his car in the driveway of the home. They are following up on leads as to why the intruder was there in the first place.
"Detectives are following up on who the vehicle belongs too, trying to contact who his family was, some of the events that occurred leading up to the break-in, may help them determine why he chose this house," said Lt. King.
Authorities are continuing to speak with the tenant, but at this point, do not believe he will face any charges.
