FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Cesar Chavez, the late farmworker organizer who became a national civil rights icon and co-founded the United Farm Workers, is accused of abusing "young women or minors."

The accusations have caused multiple events celebrating the labor leader to be canceled.

Cesar Chavez Day in multiple states is celebrated on March 31.

The serious allegations against Mexican American icon Cesar Chavez are sending shockwaves through communities and leaving questions about what happens to the dozens of institutions and landmarks named after him in the Central Valley, California and across the country.

Amid the abuse allegations, the legacy of the labor leader who co-founded the United Farm Workers Association will now be reexamined. The union has already said it will not celebrate the day named in his honor.

Jonny Itliong, the son of UFW Filipino co-founder Larry Itliong, is speaking out on behalf of his father amidst allegations made against Cesar Chavez.

Jonny Itliong, the son of UFW Filipino co-founder Larry Itliong, is speaking out on behalf of his father amidst allegations made against Cesar Chavez.

"I've been trying to expose Chavez's misdoings as far as with my father, trying to take the credit for my father who started the union and organized. It's unfortunate that it has to happen this way, but I'm glad that it's finally happening," says Johnny Itliong.

Johnny's wounds run deep; he tells Action News his father's legacy was left in the shadow of Chavez. Now, he is also hurting for the women who have come forward to say Chavez sexually assaulted them.

"My heart goes out to all of you, all of the victims," says Itliong.

Schools, cities across the Valley reconsidering Cesar Chavez legacy after abuse allegations

Communities across Central California are grappling with what to do next after abuse allegations were made against Cesar Chavez.

Communities across Central California are grappling with what to do next after abuse allegations were made against Cesar Chavez.

On Wednesday, a black cloth covered the statue of Cesar Chavez, a decision made by the University President.

Over in Planada in Merced County, the Elementary School District includes the Cesar E. Chavez Middle School, a site home to 300 students with a campus surrounded by the labor leader's images and likeness.

Superintendent Jose Gonzalez says those options include possibly rescheduling its March 31-st Cesar E. Chavez Day of Celebration to May 1, which is Planada Community Day.

Amid troubling allegations against its late founder, the United Farm Workers Foundation keeps fighting for labor rights.

With heavy hearts, foundation leaders continued with their planned rally outside of the federal courthouse in downtown Fresno as their lawyers presented their lawsuit against the Trump administration over farmworker wage cuts.

The efforts are on the same day that disturbing allegations come to light against Cesar Chavez, who is accused of abusing young women and children.

"It was shocking, shocking to me, to all of us in the union here, and we respect the victims that came forward and we asked people to respect the victims and give them this phase that they need the ability to talk when they feel safe when they are ready," says UFW President, Teresa Romero.
