Merced schools kick off summer academy for kids
The voluntary four-week program gives students in 2nd through 7th grades an opportunity to extend their learning in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Hundreds of kids are giving their education a boost.

The Merced City School District's Summer Academy started Monday at three campuses, including Reyes Elementary.

The voluntary four-week program gives students in 2nd through 7th grades an opportunity to extend their learning in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math.

It offers hands-on projects and online learning as well.

The summer academy also includes a fast track program for English-learning students.

It's a chance for kids to improve their English skills, along with other subjects.

"Summer Academy is not the old summer school when you had to come for remediation," Summer Academy principal Juanita Pedrozo said. "This is help to enhance our children. Help to encourage their learning during the summer, help to give to promote positive learning."

The Summer Academy continues through July 8.
