Broken water main floods Northeast Fresno intersection

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Crews dealt with the aftermath of a broken water main in Northeast Fresno on Saturday.

The incident caused flooding around the intersection of Shepherd and Rowell, not far from Cedar. Drivers were forced to make their way through the water slowly.

Firefighters were called out just after 11 a.m. They say the cause of the break was not immediately known, but a dip in the street left at least two feet of water in some spots.

Crews had to shut off the water to more than 50 homes to make repairs, but many residents seemed to take it in stride.

"I saw people carrying groceries from several blocks away through the water, home, but they're dealing with it. It's a nice warm day, the kids think it's a new lake, Lake Shepherd, so they're playing in it," said Battalion Chief Casey Clark with the Fresno Fire Department.

Most residents had their water supply restored before 5 p.m., but about 14 homes were still without water because of a second leak that was found. Crews were hoping to finish up those repairs by 6:30 p.m.
