Madera County added to California's monitoring list, indoor dining, bars must close

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Six more counties were added to California's watch list for an increasing number of reported coronavirus cases, including Madera County. So far, 23 counties within the state are now on the list, and five are in Central California.

The newly added counties will need to close their bars and halt indoor operations for restaurants, wineries and tasting rooms, movie theaters, zoos, museums, card rooms and family entertainment centers.

Gov. Gavin Newsom first issued these partial closures last week ahead of the Fourth of July holiday, which will remain in effect for three weeks from the time the county is added to the list.

Throughout the weekend, Newsom said state agencies were out enforcing the new restrictions.

The Alcohol Beverage Control visited 5,986 bars and restaurants to review the new orders. CalOSHA contacted 441,755 businesses, while the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology provided new safety check-lists for hairstylists and barbers.

He said 52 businesses were cited this weekend for being out of compliance but did not elaborate on specific violations. Newsom said that "an overwhelming majority" of businesses were practicing the newly ordered safety conditions.

Newsom said 13 counties, including Fresno, Kings and Tulare counties, who have issued local orders in addition to the state's new restrictions.

California reported 5,699 new cases of COVID-19 for July 5, but Newsom noted that those numbers included a backlog of two unreported days from Los Angeles County.

Hospitalizations increased by 50% over 14 days, and the number of ICU patients increased by 39% in the last two weeks. The governor said that while the state still has ample hospital capacity, the continuous increase in hospitalizations and ICU admissions is concerning.

California's positivity rate increased to 6.8% over 14 days.

The governor said he's aware of more young people being admitted to hospitals for the virus, and said it's the state's goal to do more outreach and education for younger Californians.
