FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- On Thursday morning, Campus Pointe near Fresno State was busy with hundreds of families gearing up for the first day of school.

A popular annual event hosted by the Fresno Unified School District with the goal of providing support and essential resources.

"What really makes us happy is the amount of partners out there that have just donated and donated for the right thing, and that is for kids to be ready for school," says FUSD Chief Academic Officer Carlos Castillo.

Students waited patiently in line to get a new backpack, school supplies, haircuts, immunizations and even enjoyed a special movie screening of Toy Story 5.

William Turner brought his son and daughter. Both said they're excited for the new school year.

Turner says it brings him relief as a parent to know they feel ready.

This school year also comes with several changes in staffing at multiple schools following budget pressures that were announced earlier this year.

Turner says he's aware and understands the reasons.

"I know some teachers on the sub staff that have been affected and have been moved around, demoted or have fewer hours based on this," he said. "It does worry me a little bit with the finances and the way things are going, but I understand it. There is not a lot I can do other than put my two senses in and vote."

Castillo says the shifts within the district will not impact their overall mission.

"We are confident that the changes, they were made for the children here and the families," he said. "We had a great opening with our leader, we see the enthusiasm and they are ready to go."

Fresno Unified Students go back to school on August 17.
