SAN JOSE -- San Jose police are asking witnesses to come forward after a stunning piece of video goes viral, showing several officers using physical force on one suspect.
The video has sparked outrage from some people in the community, but the San Jose Police Department say the force was needed to subdue a man who was resisting arrest.
San Jose police identified the man as 22-year-old Juan Moreno-Lopez. They say he was walking on Story Road, east of White Road on Saturday at around 8:45 at night. Two officers approached him. They say Lopez ran into the middle of the intersection, then turned toward them in a combative manner attacked one officer with a bottle and engaged both officers in a fight. The officers called for help and more officers arrived. In the video you can see officers striking Lopez.
San Jose police say Lopez continued to resist even after he was handcuffed. They eventually put him in a four point restraint, put him on a gurney and took him to the hospital in an ambulance for medical clearance. Lopez was then booked into the Santa Clara County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest, being under the influence of a stimulant, possession of methamphetamine and destruction of evidence.
The video was posted on a Facebook page the next day, Sunday, May 3.
