ESPYs: Lionel Messi, Robbie Keane, U.S. women's team all win awards

Barcelona and Argentina star Lionel Messi won the ESPY for Best International Athlete on Wednesday, beating out Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, tennis playerNovak Djokovic, golfer Lydia Ko and F1 driver Lewis Hamilton.

Messi became the all-time leading scorer in La Liga and UEFA Champions League. He helped Barcelona claim the 2014-15 Champions League title as the joint top scorer (10) and the assists leader (6).

The 2014 Ballon d'Or winner, Ronaldo led La Liga in goals for the 2014-15 season (48) and placed second in assists (16).

Messi was also a candidate for ESPYs Best Play for his goal in an until-then scoreless Copa del Rey final in a field that included Odell Beckham Jr.'s catch, the Bahamas Bowl Hail Mary andthe interception by New England Patriots' Malcolm Butler vs. the Seattle Seahawks for the game-winning TD in the final minute of the Super Bowl.

Beckham Jr. won the Best Play ESPY.

Robbie Keane won the ESPY for Best MLS Player, beating out fellow nominees including Seattle Sounders' Obafemi Martins, New England Revolution's Lee Nguyen, and New York Red Bulls' Bradley Wright-Phillips.

Martins was named as one of three MLS MVP finalists for the 2014 season, finishing the year with 17 goals and 13 assists. The Sounders won every game in which Obafemi scored.

Keane earned the 2014 MLS MVP with a 19-goal, 14-assist season. He led the LA Galaxy to their sixth consecutive postseason appearance, scoring the game-winning goal in the MLS Cup Final.

The Revolution's star midfielder and MVP finalist, Nguyen led the team with 18 goals and five assists. Over the course of the 2014 regular season, he delivered nine game-winning goals.

In his second season with the Red Bulls, Phillips won the 2014 MLS Golden Boot and tied the MLS single-season goal record with 27.

The U.S. women's soccer team won the ESPY for Best Team.The U.S. women won their first World Cup since 1999, going undefeated in group play and defeating Japan 5-2 in the final.

The awards, hosted by Joel McHale, aired on Wednesday from Los Angeles on ABC.

Online fan voting opened in June and ran through Wednesday at ESPN.com.

Ronaldo won ESPYs Best International Athlete in 2014 while Red Bulls' Tim Cahill took MLS athlete honors.
