San Mateo considers green business program

SAN MATEO, CA

Businesses that receive the certification used energy-efficient fixtures, comply with environmental regulations, adopt strategies to prevent pollution and eliminate waste, according to the office of Supervisor Mark Church. The businesses that have already been certified range from repair shops to restaurants, hotels and offices.

The program is reviewing another 35 businesses this month, according to Church's office.

"Our local businesses have displayed an overwhelming enthusiasm for the Green Business Program," Church said in a statement. "Receiving certification reduces operating costs and helps the environment. Everyone benefits."

Businesses have also found that the certification can be used as an effective marketing and advertising tool, according to Church's office.

The Board of Supervisors will consider expanding the program to a wider array of businesses such as dental offices, contractors, printers and wineries during the next meeting Jan. 29.
