A veteran firefighter is dead and another is hurt in Los Angeles after an explosion near L.A.X.35-year old Brent Lovrien was killed after he and other firefighters went to check out a report of smoke coming from manholes that cover an underground vault, near the airport.

The firefighters were trying to get into a utility room when the blast ripped through the walls of the building. A bystander also suffered minor injuries.

A major commercial area was shut down as investigators looked into the incident. Utility crews say it's possible a gas leak caused the blast.
