Breaking New Ground

September 28, 2008 12:00:00 AM PDT
A southwest Fresno congregation is hoping to kick start new development by building a new mega-church.Members of Pearly Grove Baptist Church broke ground on the site of their new church Sunday, along with help from county supervisor Phil Larson and city council member Cynthia Sterling.

The plan is to put in a big place of worship, alongside an event center that includes a full fitness center, a banquet hall, and classroom space. Charles Dickerson, Pearly Grove Baptist Church, says "It's time for real development to happen in this area. I think our church and this event center that we're building is certainly helping to lead the way in some of the development in southwest Fresno."

Pearly Grove is expanding just months after surviving a sex scandal. A jury found Pastor Dickerson not guilty of molesting two girls who eventually admitted they were lying about the abuse claims.
