911 Tapes Released from Fresno Shooting

FRESNO, Calif. Dispatcher: "911, please state your emergency."
Caller: "I've got a gun and I'm going to shoot the first cop I see."
Dispatcher: "Okay, why is that?"
Caller: "Why not?"
Dispatcher: "What's going on?"
Caller: "Nothing. Just send them all over real quick."

The phone call lasted just over three and a half minutes and the suspect thanked the dispatcher and hung up after officers arrived. Before the call ended, officers could be heard demanding the suspect drop his weapon. Police say he then ran through a neighborhood before he stopped and pointed a gun at officers. They then opened fire and killed him.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer says the recordings show the dispatcher and his officers did everything in textbook form in order to keep the situation from escalating further. "It occurs far too frequently. And that's why I think you saw that the dispatcher is very calm, and the officers are very calm. Because they're exposed to it so often," said Dyer.

Cooper's gun turned out to be a fake. Chief Dyer said had cooper not pointed it at officers, police would have worked to stabilize the situation by making a perimeter and then bringing in a crisis team to try to talk the man.

Dispatcher: Okay, why is that?

Caller: Why not?

Dispatcher: What's going on?

Caller: Nothing. Just send them all over real quick.

Dispatcher: Why do you want them all to come over there?

Caller: Just send them over here please.

Dispatcher: What do you need them over there for? What's going on?

Caller: Just send them over here. Please!

Dispatcher: Can you tell me what the problem is?

Caller: Nothing is the problem. If you don't send them over here, I'm going to shoot myself.

Dispatcher: Why are you going to shoot yourself?

Caller: Lady, just get them over here. I know they're coming now, because I can hear typing. So just hurry them up before I shoot somebody else.

Dispatcher: What type of gun do you have?

Caller: The kind that shoots bullets.

Dispatcher: Okay, what type do you have?

Caller: Lady ...

Dispatcher: What's your name?

Dispatcher: You're in the street?

Caller: Yeah.

Caller: They'll see me, because I'll shoot them when they see me.

Dispatcher: I'm sorry, what did you say?

Caller: I got a (inaudible) shirt and some jeans ... and a black beanie.

Dispatcher: You have a black beanie and jeans. And what color shirt?

Dispatcher: Well, you have to give them time to drive.

Caller: It's not important.

Dispatcher: Of course it's important. What's your name?

Caller: Why, do you to think I won't be here when you get here? I'll be here.

Dispatcher: No. Why? That's not what I mean.

Caller: They're coming down the road right now.

Dispatcher: I'm sorry. What?

Caller: They're coming down the road right now. Why'd they stop for? (Expletive) If they don't come down right this second, I'm going to shoot someone else. Tell the cop that just stopped to come down here!

Dispatcher: Who are you going to shoot?

Caller: I don't care who. Just tell the cop to hurry and get over here (inaudible, expletives)

Caller: Here they come, here they come. (sigh)
