California Investment Helping Local Communities

FRESNO, Calif.

Kids played character building games at the West Fresno Boys & Girls club Saturday as part of a youth planning workshop for the Building Healthy Communities Initiative.

The California endowment is investing several million dollars in neighborhoods around Edison, Roosevelt and Sunnyside high schools.

They're getting input from the kids at this workshop as they work on a 10-year plan that's scheduled to be done in April.

"That'll be the roadmap to actually make sure this change isn't something that's just talked about. That it carries through with specific ideas like a park here and a fresh vegetable garden here and these programs in the school," said Mary Jane Skjellerup, Healthy Communities Advisor.

The endowment's goals are to help communities end childhood obesity, stay healthy, increase school attendance, and decrease violence.
