It happened at an apartment complex at Calaveras and "B" Street in Downtown Fresno.
Fire investigators say the fire was started by a child playing with a lighter inside the apartment.
They say the apartment had a fire detector, but it had been disabled and the family had to kick out their front door to escape.
The fire burned four units, but only one was destroyed.
The Red Cross was called to help the families displaced by the fire.
