12-year-old Daniel Madsen was hit and killed by a train Tuesday morning at Ashlan and Fruit.
About a dozen friends and family members gathered at the site of the accident, with candles, flowers, and balloons.
Police say Daniel tried to beat the train as it sped toward the crossing. Counselors were on hand at Wawona Middle School where Daniel attended ... helping students and staff cope.
This is the second student death at an area railroad crossing in the last couple of years.
The school will be reinforcing railroad safety with students this week ... and encourage parents to do the same.
