Community author and activist honored by Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif.

Mattie B. Meyers is a local author, a former teacher and a Fresno community activist.

She was a local leader of the NAACP in the early 1960s and pushed for public school integration in Fresno.

Meyers was also the first woman to run for mayor in Fresno.

She recently wrote a book titled Seven Houses, an autobiographical collection of short stories about her life experiences.

"The memoirs of Mattie B. Meyers discuss her growing up as a kid and the struggles with equality and the civil rights movement. A lot of the stories in there give insight and courage on how to get through situations that we can relate to today," Fresno State student Tony Morris said.

Meyers signed copies of her book today and also donated one to Fresno State's Henry Madden Library.
