The Ordonez family has a great story and proof that a single mother can accomplish anything. In fact, she actually helped build her first home.
On Saturday volunteers, supporters and family all gathered to celebrate a day the Ordonez family says they will always remember.
With the keys in her hand, Christina Ordonez and her three kids opened the door to their new lives as homeowners. The day was also a milestone for Fresno County's Habitat for Humanity, as supporters dedicated its 100th home.
"We're certainly blessed to be in partnership with you today Christina and today is a time we remember all 100 families we have been in partnership with for all these years," Tony Miranda, Fresno County Habitat for Humanity Executive Director, said.
Supporters took time to remember others that have been a part of the Habitat family during the last 27 years.
For the single mother, owning a home never seemed financially possible. When she was just 21 she adopted her first two children and later had her daughter. She worked hard to provide for her family.
"Ten years ago when I first got the kids we've lived in 10 different houses. Since the day I was born, I've lived in 20 different houses. So although I've always had a place to live, I've never stayed anywhere long enough to consider it my home," Ordonez said.
Ordonez's story touched many along the way including volunteers and local church members. But they were also impressed with her work ethic. Ordonez put in 500 "sweat equity" to qualify for the Habitat home.
"She was a hard worker, people loved working with her and being supportive. That's just a dream scenario," Miranda said.
The 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom home took just five months to build.
Christina's oldest daughter, 14-year-old Alexis Ortiz, says she's excited to decorate and already has plans: "putting posters of Justin Bieber everywhere."
The Ordonez family says after years of living in different places, it's hard to believe they will finally get a place to truly call home.
"I wanted a place for them to live where no matter how old they got, or if they ventured out on their own, they could always come back because they knew that this would be their home," Ordonez said.
A dream come true for one deserving family - Christina and her family plan on moving into their brand new home next week.
