Lettuce thinners are helping growers deal with a labor shortage

FRESNO, Calif.

Growers say thinning a field of lettuce usually requires 20 people. But these tractors can actually do the same job, using computerized technology with vision sensors.

Growers say this is a relief since they are still experiencing a shortage of laborers -- mainly due to tighter border security.

Lettuce thinners start at $250-thousand, with some farm machine selling for as much as $600-thousand.
