VISALIA, Calif. (KFSN) -- The family of a dying Visalia man is hoping his cancer story will inspire people to raise money for others.
Alex Fernandez has been in his room for two weeks straight and counting. He said, "I'm not really counting my days right now; I'm counting the moments."
He's just 20 years old and already on his death bed. It's OK. He's at peace with it. So is his mom, Socorro Fernandez. She said, "Even though he's my baby, but he is truly the bravest man I've ever met because he knows when it's time to go, it's time to go."
Alex has three tumors: one in his brain and two growing on his spine. His cancer is terminal. He has stopped all treatments so he can focus on a list of things to do before he dies. A 49ers game is on the list. He said," I don't really have to go to a game but at least get a signed jersey."
He also wants smaller things, like one last family barbeque, one last family portrait and a trip to the beach. Actually, he checked the beach off a couple of weeks ago. "Seeing him look out to the ocean, he was so happy," Socorro said.
There is one more thing, perhaps the biggest thing on the list. It's a concert in Lindsay to raise money for people like him -- people who are dying, who can't get a wish through the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
He's selling tickets to the show. It's set for July 15, but he isn't sure if he'll make it. His mom isn't either. "My wish is that I hope he does make it to the concert. That would be wonderful, but I don't know," Socorro said.
Until then, Alex says he's fine. He has everything he needs right in his room, surrounded by family, counting the moments he has left.
