FRESNO, Calif.

More and more growers are adding pecans to their orchards.

Growers have found that pecans thrive in California soils and can be harvested using the same equipment already at work in almond and walnut orchards.

So far, California pecan orchards remain free of many of the pests that plague trees in southern states like Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi.

Livestocks farmers may want to make sure cows about to give birth get a good meal at night.

Researchers at Oklahoma State University found that heifers fed in the evening were less likely to give birth overnight.

It isn't known exactly what caused the change in labor, but scientists believe it may have something to do with a rise in certain hormones.

Calves have a higher survival rate during the day when farmers can help assist in the birth.
