Local Roundup: Diamond Sports

FRESNO, Calif.

Former Bulldog left hander Josh Poytress threw a few innings for the alumni. He's now in the Pirates minor league system. Bulldogs open their season next Friday at home against Butler.

Across Cedar Avenue at Bulldog Diamond, Fresno State took on UC Riverside in the Kickoff tournament. Bulldogs actually trailed 2-0, until catcher Kaitlin Griffin's two-run homer tied it. Fresno State would score five late runs, to pull out the 7-3 win.

And across town at Fresno Pacific University, a lot of San Francisco State purple in the crowd watching the Sunbirds struggle early. Both Karlan Andrews and Alec Mehrten go down swinging against Ryan DeJesus.

The Gators would stay hot early at the plate. Mark Lindsay's seeing eye single to right scores Miguel Flores. Former Bulldog Derek Benny found himself in trouble early, and he didn't help himself out, either. The wild pitch scores Lindsay.

But the Sunbirds come back in game one of their doubleheader to beat SF State, 9-5. They won game two as well for the sweep, 8-2.
