It happened off Samoa Beach in Humboldt County on Thursday.
Sheriff's deputies say Matthew Garcia, 21, was swimming with a friend when he disappeared in the surf. The friend made it back to shore, and a witness in the area called 911.
A Coast Guard helicopter spotted Garcia in the water and directed rescue crews to his location. They pulled him out of the ocean and performed CPR, but he later died at a hospital.
