Police responded to Benedict Avenue near Escalon Avenue just before 11 p.m. for reports of a shooting victim. When officers arrived, they found a man and woman in the roadway.
The man, identified by police as Paul Wayne Motley, 57, of Fresno, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities say he shot himself in the head.
Motley's wife was also shot once. She was transported to Community Regional Medical Center where she was listed in critical condition. Her name has not been released.
Homicide detectives say Motley's wife recently filed for divorce, and the couple had been separated since January. Investigators say Motley confronted his wife on Saturday evening after she parked her vehicle, and they say he shot her before turning the gun on himself.
