Community works to steer youth away from gangs

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Fresno men are changing lives through Donuts with Dads, a tradition that allows many schools to connect with parents, but at Gaston Donuts with Dads is about more than just sharing a conversation over sweets. It is a mentoring opportunity which may ultimately save a life.

"We've got men here for one purpose and one purpose alone and that is to make sure you young men see what men look like," Pastor D.J. Criner said.

Last week, a rash of gang shooting sent seven people to the hospital and left one dead in a 48 hour period. The man who died was Anthony Perry, the son of a former security assistant at Gaston.

"A lot of them don't know how much people care about them, so anytime people are willing to take time out of their day, just to spend a few minutes or hours with kids, that makes a tremendous difference," Pastor and guidance counselor, Joby Jones said.

The importance was recognized by mentors more than 200 men came out to be a part of the gathering.

Gaston Middle School hopes they can make Donuts with Dads an annual event.
