FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- There's a different feeling surrounding Bulldog Football-- an attitude that only a new coach can bring. The highly anticipated season opener kicks off September 2nd when the university retires Derek Carr's number four jersey.
"To be able to recognize Derek and his family and to have David back as well, it's a great homecoming and just a wonderful opportunity-- as well as it being coach Tedford's welcoming back home as well. So there are a lot of reasons to celebrate," said Fresno Administration VP Debbie Adishian-Astone.
This season fans can celebrate with a beer for the first time since 2005. The Cal State University system will allow the sale of alcohol at home games.
"We want to bring this back in the most responsible way, in areas that won't impede access to any congestion for our fans," said Adishian-Astone.
Fans will be able to purchase beer in two locations-- at Red One in the southeast corner near the Red Lot, and the other in the northwest grass area notice. These beer gardens are located on the periphery of Bulldog Stadium.
"You'll be able to get in through the stadium-- you'll have in and out privileges," said Adishian-Astone.
School officials estimate Fresno State missed out on close to a quarter of a million dollars annually since alcohol was banned from being sold at Bulldog Stadium. They said proper guidelines will be in place to minimize unruly fans, but some Red Wavers remain skeptical.
"Sometimes depending on what people do-- if they can drink socially it's not a big deal, but I think we've seen the outcome over the long term. Alcohol is not a positive-- especially with college students," said Bulldog fan Sonia Alvarez.
Keep this in mind-- if you want a beer you will have to leave your seat and walk out of the stadium to the designated area where you'll be allowed to purchase two $8 beers.
Beer sales will stop at the end of the third quarter.
