Greyhound moving Fresno bus depot

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Greyhound is moving its Fresno bus depot to a new location but it will remain downtown about a mile away.

The change takes place on Thursday so don't go to the old Greyhound bus station if you are headed out or picking someone up later this week. Greyhound will move its operations to the Santa Fe train depot.

Tuesday's ribbon-cutting marked the start of a new partnership between Greyhound and Amtrak. They'll now share space at the Santa Fe depot in part to help make travel more convenient for passengers who need connecting bus and train service. Greyhound vice president of customer experience Myron Watkins said, "It's exciting to move from a very large facility that we didn't use a lot of the space to come into one that's certainly more efficient, more convenient and it's going to be much better for the customers in the end."

The old Greyhound depot has served Fresno for over half a century. Eventually, it will be torn down. Mayor Ashley Swearengin called Greyhound's shift significant because it makes way for the next generation of transportation in Fresno-- high-speed rail. Swearengin said, "We have to think this is an enhanced service for area residents who are using mass transportation. You know at some point it's likely we'll have another multi-modal center serving the high-speed rail station as well."

Amtrak passengers like Jill Clark approved Greyhound's move. Clark said, "I think it's a great idea. It will be easier to make connections."

Greyhound's intent was to provide seamless transportation options-- adding security will be a priority.
