RANDSBURG, Calif. -- Authorities say a flight instructor and his student died when their small plane crashed in a remote part of Central California.

The Bakersfield Californian reported Friday (http://bit.ly/1oHvaMq) that the single-engine plane went down in a remote part of Kern County, about 100 miles east of Bakersfield.

The Kern County Coroner's Office reports Saturday that both men were found dead at the scene.

They say 68-year-old Michael Hill of San Diego was killed along with 27-year-old Ilam Zigante of Lancaster; it's not clear who was flying the plane.

The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are leading an investigation into what caused the crash.
