Pedestrian hit and killed by vehicle in Merced County, CHP says

MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- One person is dead after being hit by a vehicle in Merced County early Thursday morning.

It happened in the area of Santa Fe Drive and Eucalyptus Avenue before 5 am, near the town of Winton.

The California Highway Patrol says a driver was going west on Santa Fe when they hit something while trying to pass a slower vehicle.

The driver pulled over and realized they hit a man.

He was declared dead at the scene.

Drivers should avoid the area as the investigation continues.
