VISALIA, Calif. (KFSN) -- The holiday shopping season is just days away. Stores are gearing up for the madness that will kick off on Thanksgiving.
But the Visalia Police Department is also preparing, working to make sure your gifts stay safe this year.
Most view the holiday season as an opportunity to see family and friends. But for crooks, it's an opportunity to ruin Christmas.
"What we traditionally see in our community is a rise in theft-related activity in the shopping areas," said Damon Maurice of the Visalia Police Department.
Maurice says each year they send out the same warnings:
- Walk in groups
- Park near store entrances
- Lock your cars
- Roll up windows
But each year, thieves still find victims.
"It happens every year, unfortunately, that's why we're redundant every year we put this stuff out," said Maurice.
Shoppers are getting better at protecting themselves.
"Most of the time I just leave my stuff in the trunk, and I never leave it in there for more than a couple of hours," said Pamela Dilley.
Still, volunteers with the Visalia Police Department ramp up their presence at the Visalia Mall. Undercover officers are also out in greater force during the holidays.
"If you're a crook looking to do crime, obviously it's easy to try to spot a black and white vehicle," said Maurice.
Police urge people to be aware of their surroundings at all times. It's a message echoed by shoppers, hoping everyone has a happy holiday season.
"Be smart and be safe about what you're doing, and make sure your stuff isn't visible," said Dilley.
Police also say to make sure to park in a well-lit area in the parking lot. And if you see anything suspicious, make sure to report it.
