Fresno police use new ShotSpotter technology to arrest suspect

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Fresno police said their new ShotSpotter led to the arrest of a gang member after the system recorded the location of 10 shots fired in Central Fresno.

Police said the system provided them with exact latitude and longitude coordinates for where the shots were fired. When they arrived at the scene, neighbors pointed out a nearby home on Second Street near the Highway 180 embankment in Central Fresno.

When police knocked on the door, they saw a silhouette walk to the front door, then run to the back of the house. Officers at the rear of the home saw someone throw a handgun, wrapped in a T-shirt, from a bedroom window.

Police later arrested 26-year-old Chanthathong Phouikhambay, who they say admitted he fired the weapon. Police say they also found 10 shell casings in the backyard of the home. No one was hurt.

Police say Phouikhambay is a self-admitted "Lao Blood" gang member. He was arrested for unlawful discharge of a firearm.
