VISALIA, Calif. -- The veteran firefighter was hurt after falling through a roof and firefighters across the Valley are stepping up to help.

Dern suffered burns to about 70 percent of his body last Sunday while fighting that blaze at a Central Fresno home. Doctors say a biopsy of his healthy skin will be used to help grow new skin.

This past Friday, hundreds turned out at a blood drive in Fresno hosted by American Ambulance. Many emergency responders turned out to donate and some people who didn't even know the firefighter came to roll up their sleeves. On Friday, 321 people donated blood, and over a hundred thousand dollars has been collected online. The online fundraising site youcaring.com now has more than $100 thousand in promised donations.
