Making the transition from elementary to middle school is a major milestone for many students.Classes for Fresno Unified begin on Monday, but new changes have some middle school students going back to class a day early.

Teachers give 7th graders the lay of the land as they find classrooms, meet teachers, and prepare to become Awahanee Warriors. Many say it's a little intimidating. But a day of orientation helps students prepare for the first day in a new environment.

Teachers say the transition from elementary to middle school can be difficult, this is the first time students begin changing classes.

English language arts teacher Corrine Mayhew says this is a time when grades can begin to slip. She says students are given more independence and with that comes more responsibility. One parent talked with her daughter about making choices.

Teachers say social skills are just as important as academics. Ahwanee is an environmental studies magnet school bringing together students from all over Fresno County.
