Overnight crash in Merced kills one, damages home

FRESNO, Calif.

The accident happened at the intersection of "M" Street and University drive just before 1 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Officers arrived at the scene to find an Oldsmobile next to a home with a driver pinned inside, and a Chevy pickup truck about 175 feet down the street.

The driver of the Oldsmobile was removed from the car by the Merced City Fire Department and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Chevy truck, 18-year-old Zachary Lemas, and a 17-year-old passenger were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Merced Police say it appears the Chevy pickup was traveling at a high rate of speed when they collided. They say the impact spun the Oldsmobile into a street light pole and then into the side of home before coming to a stop. The impact broke the street light and sent a piece of it through the roof of the home that was hit by the car.

The people inside the home were uninjured.

Merced Police are still investigating the incident.
