Kids at Martin Luther King Elementary in Southwest Fresno are participating in arts and crafts and a basketball camp this week. Many say this vacation bible school gets them out of the house.

This is one of several community projects for Breakaway -- a spring break outreach program hosted by Peoples Church in Northeast Fresno.

More than 300 students are involved -- during spring break organizers normally take students to Mexico on mission trips, but because of recent violence in that country the trip was canceled and now the focus is here at home.

Jr. High students spent their day pulling weeds, working to help complete the second home Randy Hurley started building nearly a year ago for he and his wife who has a form of Lou Gehrig's disease.

Church volunteers are now helping to build a fence, pour a concrete side walk before final inspection -- but these kids don't see it as hard work.

Breakaway organizers say there is a lesson all students can learn when in giving back.
