The CHP says the driver of a PT Cruiser ran the stop sign at North Avenue, and plowed into the side of another car. Both cars ended up in the canal -- one on its hood, nose first into the water.
A child inside the black car was flown to a hospital and was last listed in critical condition. The Highway Patrol says the child's mother and two people in the PT Cruiser were not seriously hurt.
Officers don't know why the driver missed the stop sign. They say alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in the crash.
