At least four families without homes because of an apartment fire in Northeast Fresno.

The fire happened Wednesday night at the Springs Apartment complex on First and El Paso.

Flames spread quickly on the outside walls and across the roof of the building. The people who live in the unit next to the burning apartment were asleep, but everyone got out safely.

Investigators say the fire started in a chimney. They say it's not the first chimney fire at the complex. "This is the 5th fire at this complex that we're aware of and that the apartment manager has had here and the second one that was caused by zero clearance fire place," said Fresno Fire Battalion Chief Chuck Tobias.

Three apartment units burned and one has water damage. The families will soon move into vacant units at the complex.
