Tire Amnesty Day kicked off in 2005 and rolled out three times a year. The program was state-funded by a $25 thousand grant. This year the city will not get that money from the state because of a tight budget. Many auto shops do accept used tires for a fee.
Now city leaders are worried people will dump the tires in Fresno alleyways and on sidewalks.
Clint Olivier explained, "Here in the city of Fresno we have a community that deals with concentrated poverty and so not everybody is able to properly dispose of their tires so they start showing up in dirt lots and alleys behind houses."
The fine for those caught dumping tires is $500.00 for the first offense, $1,000.00 for the second, and $3,000.00 for the third offence.
