The city of Chowchilla filed an injunction to try and stop the department of corrections from converting the Central Valley Women's Prison into a prison for lower level male offenders. But a judge sided with the department of corrections and lifted the injunction.
Madera County Supervisor David Rogers says it's a blow to the community. He said, "I am disappointed this community will not have a voice in its future. I am disappointed in the state of California."
Rogers and others fear the families of male inmates will move to Chowchilla and cause problems. That's a perception the department of corrections says is unfounded. The two-thousand women in the prison will be relocated. The neighboring Central California Women's Facility will remain for women only.
