Governor Jerry Brown stepped in late last night to prevent BART workers from walking off the job. Brown used a law that allows the state to step in if a strike threatens to significantly disrupt public services. However, the governor's action may not fix the problem for long.
"For the next seven days the trains will run. There will be no lock-out. There will be no strike. The governor has asked for a board of inquiry to look at whether or not a 60-day cooling-off period is necessary," said Roxanne Sanchez, SEIU 1021 President.
That board of inquiry investigation will be completed this week while the unions and BART officials continue to negotiate a new contract.
The union representing BART workers had ordered a strike if a deal wasn't reached by midnight Monday.
