Dinuba teacher dies after brain tumor diagnosis, family says
Family members say Dinuba High School teacher Vince Costi was diagnosed with a brain tumor and died two days later due to complications.

DINUBA, Calif. (KFSN) -- A beloved biology teacher is being remembered by the South Valley community he served.

Dinuba High School administrators say teacher Vince Costi died unexpectedly on Friday. Family members tell Action News that Costi was diagnosed with a brain tumor and died two days later due to complications.

Mr. Costi, students say, always had a smile on his face. He reportedly had a brain tumor -- something his student Arturo Madrigal learned after Costi passed away Friday.

"I didn't know he was sick. He was always happy in the classroom," said Madrigal.

Dinuba High School Principal Chris Meyer posted a note on the school's Facebook page Saturday. He says, "Mr. Costi was loved and respected by his family, students, and colleagues. Mr. Costi positively impacted the lives of many, and as such, we know that the coming days will be difficult for students and staff alike."

That post was flooded with dozens of current and former students sharing their memories of the science teacher. One student says, "Thank you for keeping me interested in science, you always made it so fun! You opened so many doors for me, and made me see the light in possibilities."

Other Facebook posts also talked about Costi's involvement in tennis at the high school.

Madrigal says he doesn't know who will take over for Mr. Costi's biology class or what will happen in class on Monday.

"I hope his family is doing OK because losing somebody like that...that was so kind, it would be hurtful," he said. "And I think he had kids too, so that's more sad."

School administrators say starting Monday morning, counselors, chaplains and psychologists will be on site for students and staff who need support. According to the high school's Facebook post, an additional grieving center will also be open.

Costi's family says there will be a memorial service at Dinuba High School later this week for past and present students and staff. They expect a very big turnout.
