FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Standing side by side, local leaders called for unity Friday after a firestorm erupted over a controversial hiring at Gaston Middle School. Some were upset that a minority wasn't hired to teach cultural studies courses.
"This issue has raised a hornet's nest of a debate, but I believe the entire community has goodwill in mind because we recognize that it's our children we're talking about," said Pastor Jymme Foote of Breaking Free Revival Center.
These members say their focus is on children and providing the best education for kids. Several advocates spoke in support of Peter Beck, the newly hired cultural studies teacher.
"I've had the opportunity to personally speak with Mr. Beck at length, and I know that every student who takes his courses will have an enlightening, enriching and wonderful experience," said Bob Mitchell, co-chair of the Golden Westside Committee.
Action News got an inside look at the brand-new middle school, where students will learn in a new state-of-the-art building. Southwest Fresno residents have advocated for a middle school for years and have been a part of the process from start to finish. They hope it will be a beacon of light for all.
"We're incredibly excited about the opening here and what it's going to do for the city. This is a city changer," said FUSD Superintendent Michael Hanson. "As pastor said a building that didn't exist for 35 years, we've been bussing kids across the city, that ends as of August 18th. We're incredibly proud of that."
Although this controversy divided some, they hope to now unite the city.
"Whatever school district you are a part of, whatever school your children go to or your neighbors' children go to, that you support this administration, these schools and these teachers, and let's work together on behalf of our children," said Pastor Foote.
With this announcement, leaders are hoping the community can unite and move forward -- especially as it starts a new chapter when it opens Gaston Middle School on August 18.
