Esperanza
ABC30 looks at the novella series designed to inform viewers about preventing diabetes. Dr. Mario Martinez with Adventist Health is featured in the series and talks to Graciela Moreno about the disease impacting so many Latinos.
Adventist Health cares for many diabetes patients at Community Care clinics (more than 30 Community Care clinics throughout the Central Valley); the majority of their diabetes patients are Hispanic.
The goal of the campaign is to introduce a real-life family scenario where a grandmother (Esperanza) experiences a diabetic episode while the family is on a trip in Mexico. Her son questions whether Esperanza is healthy enough to return to Mexico for Christmas. Esperanza decides to take action and consult a doctor. He gives her 6 months to change her eating habits and exercise, at which time he will re-examine whether she is healthy enough to go to Mexico for Christmas.
Episode 8 features Dr. Martinez as the physician for Esperanza's daughter-in-law, Claudia, who is pregnant. Esperanza joins Claudia at one of her doctor's appointments and learns Claudia is bordering on gestational diabetes, which women can develop during pregnancy.
Tips to Prevent Gestational Diabetes:
-Eat lots of protein, such as eggs, chicken and peanut butter
-Eat wholegrain varieties, such as whole grain bread, whole grain cereals and whole grain rice
-Stay away from artificial sugars and sweets, instead, replace with natural fruits and veggies
-Drink plenty of water
-Visit with your doctor early

Reestablishing Stratford
Reestablishing Stratford is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the struggling community through positive events, services, and resources.
Stratford is in Kings County. The organization is governed by a five-member Board of Directors, all of whom are either current or former Stratford residents. Event assistance is provided by the organization's members - concerned Stratford residents who wish to make a difference in their community. Ramon Chavez and Rob Isquierdo talk with Graciela Moreno about their efforts to improve this town including their 5K run.
Reestablishing Stratford is committed to identifying, developing, and providing events, services, and resources beneficial to residents and their community.
Objectives include:
-Create activities which foster physical and mental enrichment for the residents of Stratford;
-Organize and sustain positive community events;
-Develop young leaders in Stratford by providing educational opportunities; and
-Partner with existing organizations to assist with developing and sustaining services, resources, and programs.

Getting Latinos to Vote
Samuel Molina, the state deputy director of Mi Familia Vota and Pedro Navarro Cruz who is a campus organizer chat about efforts to get more Latinos to register to vote.
Mi Familia Vota is a national non-profit organization that unites Latino, immigrant, and allied communities to promote social and economic justice through increased civic participation by promoting citizenship, voter registration, and voter participation.

Mana Makes History
The Mexican rock group Mana received the star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Wednesday night.
The moment made history. They are the first Mexican rock band to receive this honor.
Carlos Santana and actress America Ferrera were also on hand for the festivities. Mana will return to the central valley on September 20th. Tickets for the concert at the Save Mart Center go on sale February 19th.
