MERCED, Calif. (KFSN) -- Students in the North Valley learned what it is like to be a firefighter and how to stay safe during emergencies.
A transitional kindergarten class from Charles Wright Elementary in Merced went on a field trip to Fire Station 51 Thursday morning. They learned about all of the equipment and what to do if they hear a smoke alarm.
The students even had a chance to try using a fire hose.
This extended learning opportunity ties into a social studies unit called "Helpers in the Community." It also leads into fire prevention week, which is coming up from October 9th through the 15th.
The fire station is less than a mile from Wright Elementary, so the students walked there with their teachers, principal, and parent volunteers. They were able to practice social skills such as how to use a crosswalk, and they also observed nature along the way.
Three kindergarten classes also enjoyed this same walking field trip.
