New regulations for truck drivers in effect

Every driver now has to install an Electronic Log Device in their cab to record the time they spend behind the wheel.

Until now, it was up to the driver to fill the log out manually. But drivers say the new ELD prevents them from taking short breaks and it would count against them when they are at the dock waiting to load or unload.

The regulations are federal and don't apply to intrastate drivers. So if drivers stay in California entirely, they can stay on paper logs. In fact, by state law, if they're driving no more than 100 miles from their home base, they don't even have to record more than a time card.

California might eventually join the feds in mandating the use of the electronic logging devices, but it does *not* right now. No state does. Texas is the first to announce it will require them, but that's not until December 2019.

Truckers have held rallies opposing the new regulations.
