Parvo outbreak forces Lemoore shelter to temporarily close to public

LEMOORE, Calif. (KFSN) -- Twelve puppies are being cared for at Valley Animal Haven's infirmary.

They recently came into contact with Parvovirus, an illness commonly found in puppies and older dogs, typically causing them to experience diarrhea, vomiting, and loss of appetite.

Valley Animal Haven Executive Director Pam Brasil says it is the largest Parvo outbreak her shelter has had.

Two of the 12 puppies are in critical condition, requiring extra fluids to prevent dehydration. They are also at risk of contracting other illnesses while they fight off Parvo.

"Anything six months and under we're keeping a very close eye on," Brasil said.

That includes an additional nineteen puppies being closely watched for symptoms of Parvo. Outside, staff members continue to clean all kennels with heavy-duty disinfectants.

Brasil thinks a visitor probably tracked Parvo to the shelter. It can be transferred by shoes that have stepped in an infected dog's feces.

"That's why we've closed to the public," Brasil said. "We don't want to run the risk of bringing in even additional contamination when we're already working to get the contamination under control that we've had in those specific kennels."

The shelter hopes to reopen next Thursday. They rely on donations and are using lots of supplies to get the outbreak under control.
