SANGER, Calif. (KFSN) -- A Sanger intersection that was declared "dangerous" is getting new traffic signals.

This follows years of calls for safety measures at Bethel and Almond avenues.

Several tragic crashes have occurred near the intersection.

The intersection is in the southeast portion of the city, not far from Sanger High School.

Crews are currently working there to finish installing new traffic lights.

"There will be traffic signals at all four angles coming in. And currently, we have stop signs in place," said Sanger City Manager Nathan Olson.

Olson says the $825,000 project was funded by a Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) grant and transportation funds.

It aims to improve visibility in the four-way intersection where residents have advocated for greater safety measures

The intersection is close to Sanger High School. District officials are asking drivers to be extra vigilant in school zones.

"Especially as we're coming back to school. And I think that's something - just working with all of our students. Even mine, when they were in school. Just because there's a light that is saying you can walk... look both ways," said Dr. Dennis Weichmann, Sanger Unified School District's superintendent.

In February of 2025, two Sanger High students were hit by a Jeep at Bethel and Almond.

17-year-old Hubert Hsu died, and his longtime friend Bethany Ray was seriously injured. At the time, Hsu's father told Action News his son had just interviewed at MIT and was looking forward to another at Harvard.

Hsu's bright future was tragically cut short in the crash, which happened less than a year after 10-year-old Jameson Doyle was hit and killed just down the road.

Ray and Hsu's families have filed separate lawsuits against both the city and the Sanger Unified School District.

While neither the city nor the district would comment on those suits, citing pending litigation, both entities say they are working together to look at other areas in Sanger that may also require improvements.

"There are a few different intersections in town people have requested lighting at. And those are being addressed," said Olson.

He says those include planned intersections near North and Greenwood as part of developments currently under construction, as well as signalization at North and Bethel Avenues.

The city expects the signals to start operating Monday as a four-way flashing red for about 48 hours until the project is completed.
