Ford announces 200-mile per hour Mustang

FRESNO, California

A video provided by the Ford Motor Company shows the /*2013 Mustang Shelby GT 500*/. The car features 650 horsepower of pure American muscle that /*Ford*/ claims would make it the most powerful vehicle in its class. It can reach up to 200 miles per hour -- beating the 2012 model which is electronically limited to just 155.

"It's always exciting when they produce a special edition car like that and get the buyers kind of getting the frenzy for the Mustang in general, not just this particular car," said Tony Swertfager.

Swertfager is the sales manager for Lithia Ford in North Fresno. Two 2012 Mustang Shelby's sit in his showroom floor and another 2011 model can't be ignored on the lot. He says the typical buyer for this model is more responsible than most. "The past people that have bought them from us generally are more professional. Usually car collectors are buying them to add to their stable. Generally more responsible drivers. So I don't think there will be people trying to do 200 miles per hour."

A lot of that has to do with the price tag. This year's Shelby car goes for anywhere between $49,000 and $69,000. That number however pales in comparison to other high end cars that can reach similar speeds.

The amount of high performance vehicles on Valley roads could increase as other automakers are expected to follow Ford's lead.

Law enforcement officials are reminding drivers of the dangers and costs of driving too fast.

"I can tell you that the base fine is a $500 fine. By the time you get done with adding on other court fees and stuff. I'm guessing you can be looking at somewhere in the neighborhood of $900-$1,000. The court also has the option of suspending your license for 30 days," said Sgt. Richard Tucker with the Fresno Police Department.

The Ford Mustang Shelby GT 500 will hit showrooms next summer and Lithia Ford in Fresno says they will have them in stock -- although the company hasn't said how much it will sell for.
